DEDICATIONS
Angela dedicates this book to her sister and best friend, Gina, who pulled her back from the brink by always seeing and saying the truth.
Matt dedicates this book to his son, Emmett, who is the reason he does what he does for all Autistic people.
ANGELA’S ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
This book would not have been written without my amazing podcast cohost, Matt Lowry. Together, we created The Autistic Culture Podcast to celebrate neurodiversity and to help Autistic people love and leverage our shared heritage and birthright. Autistic voices have been shut out, as have the voices of many marginalized people. That’s changing, and nothing (and no one) can stop the tide.
I knew from the first time I heard his Legend of Autistica on Meg Farrell’s Two Sides of the Spectrum podcast I had to get it in a book. It’s my mission to have this story handed to every newly diagnosed Autistic rather than pamphlets on CBT and ABA.
Putting that story into this book came out of an experience I had holding my sister’s hand through the God-awful process of mental health evaluation most people in America experience. Diagnosis for neurodivergence is just usually wrong and not everyone can go to Matt for their eval. We think this book is the next best thing – maybe even better in some cases. In any case, I put this book together because it’s everything I was texting my bestie, who also happens to be my sister, Gina, as I tried to support her through her kid’s diagnosis process. Texting Gina is my favorite procrastination buddy, and this book really started as a series of “hate-texts” about the neuropsych assigned to my awesome nephew’s case, while avoiding homework for my psychology master’s program.
My nephew’s evaluation was disrespectful, inaccurate, and filled with gaslighting, indirect, and manipulative communication. No one deserves that, but sadly, it’s what most people get, and most people don’t have me or Matt as their friend or family member to straighten things out. That’s our hope for this book. I’m grateful to Gina for inspiring it.
I am also filled with love and thanks for the entire North Somerset crew – Nicky, Zig, Leanne, Winter, Charlotte, Noah, Henry, Jacob, Nicole, and, of course, James and Helen. Cups of tea with you all make My Autistic Life so much better than I could have imagined when I was first diagnosed. You all have taught me I didn’t need to fix anything, and I could be loved and accepted exactly as I am and for that I am eternally grateful.
My final thanks goes to my ride-or-die partner in life, love, business, and books. Thanks for feeding my body and soul through this process. I love you, Paul.
MATT’S ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I dedicated this book to my son, Emmett, because without him being born, and being just like me, I might have stayed in the neuro-closet and played it safe rather than stand up and be vocally Autistic.
I am grateful to Mary Maier, for all of the work she’s done at Trailhouse. I’ve always dreamt of having an Autistic safe space, but she stepped up and did the hard work to make it happen.
My thanks also go to the Autisticrats, Amy Haesler, Kade Sharp, Rachel Kraus, Erin Findley, Amanda Besinger, and CJ Chaney. They’ve been my guiding voice on my professional and personal journey, and they also practice AuCT. If you are looking for a provider, I recommend them all.
Finally, my deepest thanks go to Angela, the Gandalf to my Bilbo Baggins. I like the comfy security of my hobbit hole, but she came along and got me to go on an unexpected journey with the podcast, this book, and beyond.
ABOUT ANGELA KINGDON
Dr. Angela Kingdon is a leading Autistic advocate, bestselling author, and award-winning podcast host dedicated to advancing neurodiversity. As the host of The Autistic Culture Podcast, Angela explores the richness of Autistic life—highlighting deep thinking, sensory experiences, special interests, and communication differences—all through an #ActuallyAutistic lens. Her podcast has garnered significant recognition, becoming a Substack bestseller, a GoodPods Top 100 podcast, and a finalist for Best Society & Culture Podcast at the Quill Podcast Awards.
Angela’s passion for neurodiversity extends into academia, where she serves as a member of the editorial board of Neurodiversity Journal, where she helps shape and influence conversations around autism and neurodiversity in the academic community. She is a postgraduate University of Kent's psychology department, specializing in autism research. This role allows her to further explore the Autistic experience and contribute to the growing body of knowledge that informs neurodiversity-affirming practices.
Diagnosed at age 39, Angela’s journey as a late-diagnosed Autistic person has been pivotal to her career. This discovery empowered her to fully embrace her neurodivergent identity and to advocate for more inclusive spaces for Autistic individuals. Leveraging her expertise in communication, she has authored eight books, including neurodiversity-affirming titles like The Equalizing Quill, which promotes neuroinclusive strategies in leadership and workplace environments.

ABOUT MATT LOWRY
Written by Matt’s colleague, Erin Findley, PsyD
Star Wars superfan. Dedicated dad. Passionate investigator. Caring, thoughtful, curious, insightful, generous. These are all qualities I’ve seen in Matt as I’ve gotten to know him as a fellow psychological evaluator and colleague.
He consistently gives back to the Autistic and Neurodivergent communities, offering his wisdom, perspective, and insights in a way that are highly relatable and also very digestible. Those of us who benefit from his insight and his way with words can’t help but share, and the word spreads like wildfire when it gets out. It’s not an accident that Matt has gone viral on TikTok - TWICE - without even having a TikTok account!
If you want to work with someone who takes the time to understand you from the inside out, instead of making assumptions about you from the outside, Matt would be a fantastic choice. He’s one of the few I would send my loved ones to if they needed an assessment.
Matt is unlikely to be found on social media.
ABOUT AUTISTIC CULTURE PODCAST
Licensed Psychological Practitioner, Matt Lowry, and late-diagnosed Autistic author and advocate Dr. Angela Kingdon host this light-hearted podcast celebrating Autistic culture including the art, music, fashion, and humor of famous Autistics in history and entertainment media. By exploring our Autistic ancestry, the hosts provide insights to bridge the double empathy gap between Autistics and allistics and to make the world a safer and happier place for our Autistic kin.
We believe that celebrating Autistic Joy is our greatest act of resistance in a world that was not made for us, and some days feels like it seeks to destroy us for being who we were born to be. We make our main podcast totally free, but it’s quite expensive to make and is a huge time commitment.
Join us in celebrating the extraordinary minds, and unique contributions, of our Autistic “family members” across history. We’ll be your sassy, fun-loving guides as you journey with us into the values, traditions, and norms of “Autistica”—all of which, tie back to the one thing that we all have in common: the monotropic focus of our hyper-connected brains.
No missing puzzle pieces here! We’re here, we’re Autistic, get used to it!
