It’s so hard to find the right schooling option for our kiddos. I finally had to homeschool my youngest because he was unable to go to school because it stresses him out. I agree about NT wanting people to suffer. Everyone thought I was being too lenient on him, but he was in autistic burnout at age 9! I had to do something. I did not make him go to school for the last month of the year and for the first 2 months of this year. I went ahead and decided to do an online charter. We did a placement test for him to know where to start and he was still above grade level in all of the subjects! When you are autistic you continue to learn naturally. I was worried I may have made a mistake but he proved me wrong. I love that about him! He thanks me all the time for allowing him to be who he is. It is fun, we did an entire unit study on the Titanic. I have learned over and over again to listen to my children and not doubt what they are saying. Finding the right school placement is tough. He is also in a nature school now 2x per week where he spends 75% of the day outdoors. He gets to get up and leave the learning area when he feels overwhelmed and is able to self regulate whenever he needs to. They can go climb a tree or do whatever their body needs to regulate. Everyone told me that he would just make excuses all day to climb trees and not learn anything. This turned out to be so untrue! Again, autistic brains NEED to learn. And the learning for him now is self directed. It’s a difficult jump and both me and my husband work, but we pull it off. We don’t give screen time limits either. My son makes engines out of legos and powers them with our vacuum cleaner, he makes his own stop animation videos and he reads all about the Titanic. I had do take a huge step like this for my oldest non-speaker. They know the way. I am convinced everyone at the nature school is autistic or at least neurodivergent. I can feel the energy when I go there. I almost always can tell when someone has ADHD or is Autistic when I first meet them because I feel their energy. I know it sounds crazy but I feel like I’m like a magnet to other neurodiverse people. Anyone else have this spidey sense?
