Listen now | In this episode of The Autistic Culture Podcast: The podcast hosts discuss their complicated feelings around Christmas - there is holiday magic but also overstimulation, family stress, and past trauma. They note that some Christmas TV specials resonate with autistic experiences, like Charlie Brown feeling overwhelmed while others find joy, or the Grinch hating loud noises.
I love your podcast! Thank you for the insights on Christmas. I love how enthusiastic both of you are about being Autistic. Thank you for this podcast!!
Fruitcake in its current rendition was created by colonies when sugar was becoming more readily available and there was an excess of candied fruit but it was embrace by the Victorians, who were second only to the housewives of the 50s-70s in their highly questionable food creation decisions but it originate back in Ancient Rome where the alcohol and spices helped preserve the cake and fruit for longer! Fun fact, it is because of Queen Victoria that fruit cake is still traditionally included in the wedding cakes of royal weddings to this day. It is still gross and should be avoided at all costs.
I am a late self-identified autistic. I really enjoy your podcast which helps me learn about myself, my kiddos, and how to function in a world full of NTs.
In this Christmas episode, I appreciate you (Angela) sharing your experience planning out your vacation with your sensory needs in mind, and also suggesting applying that to the holidays. Thanks.
I also want to say that I went a little bonkers when I heard you say, “with Matt and I” toward the end of the episode, because the proper grammar is “with Matt and me”.
