I have to say that, listening to your description of Autism $peaks and how they encourage parents to hold a funeral ceremony for their kids, I was SO happy that my daughter wasn't diagnosed until she was 16! Because by that point, we already knew what a fantastic, intelligent, creative kid she was and we had zero interest in trying to change her.
Now, she hadn't gotten to that point without any supports - we found out she had sensory processing and auditory processing issues by age 6, and she had OT and speech therapy for several years to help her build up her coordination and muscle tone. Eventually, we realized that a huge number of our family are also autistic, including me and my 95-year-old mother . . .so it's definitely a generational thing. Keep up the good work!
I'm so glad your daughter got the love and support she deserves from her family! Yes! The generational stuff is so interesting when we start unpacking it. Autistics grow on trees--family trees! LOL :)
I've got to tell y'all...my autistic 10yo walked into the room while I was listening to this episode, and it happened to be at the bleach part...and his IMMEDIATE response: "Nooooooo! That's not right. Autism is in your brain, not your gut. That will KILL you. And your good gut bacteria." He's also super excited to listen to the next one, because dang, he likes Dino nuggies. 😉
Awww I love this - and now all I can think is "How much did I swear???" I'm not great at editing my speech to make it kid friendly. Sorry if I accidentally expanded your kids vocabulary! Thanks for taking the time to comment!
