Neurodivergent Narratives - Writing Prompt #14
“Your intuition knows what to write, so get out of the way.” —Ray Bradbury
Right now, I’m (hopefully) somewhere in the middle of the ocean, enjoying the one magical week a year when my kids are the same age. With their birthdays just 359 days apart, we’ve always tried to make these six days special—and over the years, that’s meant a lot of cruises. Fun fact: most cruise ships have libraries! And believe it or not, I’ve written threebooks while sailing the high seas. This week, I’m adding another to that list.
I’m ghostwriting a book for a speech-language pathologist who’s got a publishing deal for a book on neuroaffirming SLP practices for non-speaking Autistic kids. It’s the kind of work I love—helping experts bring their knowledge to life in a way that truly reflects the lived experiences of Autistic people. My mornings on this trip will start early, around 5 a.m. while my teenagers are still deep in their post-adventure slumber. I’ll write until about 9, then we’ll head to breakfast as a family and enjoy the rest of the day together. It’s a routine that works—balancing deep focus with family time.
I used to say writers write, but these days, I’m a little more flexible with that. However, when you’ve got deadlines and paying clients, well... writers definitely write. And since I pre-wrote this before we set sail (because cruise ship WiFi can be, well... questionable), I’m hoping by the time you’re reading this, we haven't hit an iceberg or anything! That would make this a very creepy week in Neurodivergent Narratives.
Whether you're writing on land or at sea, our Neurodivergent Narratives writing circle is here to help you stay on track, find joy in your words, and build writing into your life—on your own terms.
