Listen now | In this episode, Matt and Angela dive into the Renaissance Fest—a sensory wonderland for autistic folks—and unpack how LARPing speaks to the autistic experience.
Very educational episode for me in Ireland where we don't have Ren Faires, probably due to our history with the English 😉 They are some historical reactments mostly focused on battles. ⚔️
LARPing was also a new term to me and sounds a bit like a more complex improv. I regularly join online ND improv sessions and they are so much fun and a great opportunity to experiment. 🎭
I particular loved Angela and Matt looping on echolalia. 😂
Hey, Sami here (the new content manager for The Autistic Culture Podcast)! Thanks so much for your comment! Echolalia is such a fascinating topic—I personally love how it shows up in so many unique ways in our communication. And LARPing? That’s such a cool intersection of creativity and identity—I’d love to explore that more on the podcast. If you have any personal experiences or thoughts on either, I’d be so excited to hear them. Your feedback helps us make the podcast even better! 💜
This episode was a lot of fun (and much needed US election day distraction). I was into Rocky Horror for years and have friends who are into LARPing, SCA and Ren Faire, but somehow it'd never occurred to me that they were different flavors of the same SpIn 😂
Would you put tribute bands (guys who dress up like the Beatles and perform their music, etc etc) in the same category?
Oh actually maybe!!! I didn’t make that connection but I do think that can be it. Thinking of all the Queen tribute bands for sure. Have you listened to Freddie is Autistic?
Absolutely! (I've just finished going through your whole back catalog 😄) The Beatles were a SpIn of mine for years and I've seen several different bands. The way they worked on matching the costumes and the performance styles definitely felt familiar when I was listening to this. It's acting but with a very particular goal...
LOVED this episode, especially the discussion about LARPing. If any of you have autistic kids, I highly recommend checking out The Story School, a summer camp in Massachusetts. That place can be completely transformative.

Been waiting for an episode on faires. Did not disappoint.
On an unrelated note, I'm not seeing an update to the shop. Still leads me to TeePublic
AH!!! Great point!! I thought our new Content Manager Sami had done it but it looks like she hasn't. Here's the link:
